The RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) has been honouring outstanding architects and architectural work for almost 2 centuries; their awards are internationally recognised as a mark of excellence. The 2022 RIBA London Awards have recognised two exceptional developments, Belle View, Hampstead, and Hawley Wharf, Camden, that Galostar have had the honour of contributing to. Additionally, Hawley Wharf has been further recognised with a RIBA National Award.

Belle View

AWARDS: RIBA London Award 2022

Belle Vue Hampstead is a vibrant development of one- and two-bedroom retirement apartments designed to foster creativity, drawing inspiration from the surrounding area and the artists who have lived there.

“To avoid the scale of the project creating a sense of institutionalism, the architects have added a warmth and domesticity to the building through carefully considered materials and façade details. Tumbled brickwork is used to help bed the scheme into the older Victorian context and has a satisfying solidity and hand-crafted feel to it. This sense of solidity and permanence is further amplified by the wedge-shaped reveals and window heads that are allowed to playfully pattern the façades. A precast concrete string course separates floors and creates an additional layer of depth and tension which is key to the success of the sophisticated elevational treatment. The near-exclusive use of red brick for the external façades, relying only on subtle articulation and detail to create depth, shadow, and scale, is a commendable and refreshing achievement.”

Hawley Wharf

AWARDS: RIBA London Award 2022 and RIBA National Award 2022 (sponsored by Forterra)

As part of the regeneration of London’s vibrant Camden Town we were appointed in 2015 as the Masonry contractor for the first phase of the Camden Lock Village development, which includes residential and high-quality public realm construction. Our involvement also included the refurbishment of existing Building A0 which faces out onto the high street

“The school and adjacent residential block form new active frontage to Hawley Road. Around the corner on Castlehaven Road, another new residential block opens up a dialogue with the park opposite. The retained and refurbished street frontage on Camden High Street to the west improves the public realm by increasing the pavement width. The new open-sided market buildings overlook the canal and a new canal-side public square. Each connection, route and building façade has been sensitively considered, with material selections and detailing enriched by references to Camden’s industrial past.”
